Air Canada Launches A321XLR Flights to London Heathrow

Air Canada is gearing up to expand its transatlantic network with the introduction of the Airbus A321XLR on three key routes to London Heathrow (LHR). Beginning in December 2026, the carrier will launch an 8-hour nonstop service from Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) to LHR, marking the first time the A321XLR will operate from Ottawa. This seasonal route, running three times a week, will transition to an A330-300 in late March 2027, highlighting the A321XLR's role in serving long-haul routes during lower-demand periods.

The following day, Air Canada will switch its Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) to LHR route from a Boeing 737 MAX 8 to the A321XLR, with plans to operate the service until at least August 2027. Initially flying four times weekly, the frequency will increase to daily during the summer schedule. Additionally, the A321XLR will introduce a daytime rotation between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and LHR starting March 28, 2027, offering travelers a convenient alternative to overnight flights.

Air Canada has taken delivery of three A321XLRs from an order of 30, with the aircraft featuring a two-class seating layout. The business class offers 14 lie-flat suites, while the economy class accommodates 168 passengers with Collins Aerospace Meridian+ slimline seats. Airbus emphasizes the A321XLR's efficiency, citing a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat and the ability to operate with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
