Air New Zealand's non-stop flight from New York City to Auckland, operated three times a week on a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9, offers a unique economy class experience with its Skycouch seating. The Skycouch transforms three economy seats into a comfortable bed, providing passengers with a 29-inch wide and 61-inch long sleeping area. This feature is available in seats 37H, J, and K, and the flight duration is approximately 16 hours and 40 minutes, though a recent flight was delayed by about 70 minutes.

Passengers who booked the Skycouch received a white mattress topper, along with the standard economy blanket and pillow, enhancing comfort during the long flight. The entertainment system features 13.3-inch screens, one of the largest in any economy cabin, and offers a good selection of content. Wi-Fi is free and easily accessible. The service was praised for its efficiency, with friendly crew members ensuring a smooth journey.

The food served to Skycouch passengers was the standard economy menu, which included options like beef ragu with polenta and red peppers, accompanied by a glass of Villa Maria sauvignon blanc. Air New Zealand is committed to sustainability, aiming to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and using 10 percent sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.

However, it's important to note that the Skycouch is not available on every long-haul Air New Zealand plane. A fellow passenger mentioned that her Skycouch booking was canceled due to operational issues, resulting in a refund. The cost for a return trip from Sydney to New York with Skycouch is approximately $5,250, compared to $1,900 for standard economy and $12,500 for business class.
