Air New Zealand's Economy Skynest Offers Lie-Flat Sleep Pods for Ultra-Long-Haul Flights
Air New Zealand's new Economy Skynest has been touted as an innovative solution for long-haul travel. The airline offers six lie-flat bunk-style sleep pods that economy passengers can book for four-hour rest periods, starting at $292.
However, this price is only part of the story. Skynest is not a ticket class in its own right but rather an add-on to existing economy or premium economy fares.
The airline believes it can monetize unused demand from passengers who want better sleep but cannot afford the full jump to Premium Economy or Business Class.
The design of Skynest is optimized for sleeping, with a compact sleep compartment built into the aircraft. Each pod includes a mesh privacy curtain, ambient lighting, and reading light, as well as personal storage space and charging ports.
