Airline's Secret to Higher Revenue: Give Passengers More Privacy
Airlines have discovered a secret to increasing revenue without sacrificing comfort: offering passengers more privacy. Emirates is leading this trend, introducing its new Premium Economy cabin, which includes full-height adjustable privacy screens between every seat.
The airline claims that passengers don't need luxury amenities like champagne or pyjamas; they just want the ability to tune out their surroundings. Associate Professor Gavin Northey from Griffith University agrees, stating 'people don't need the champagne, they don't need the pyjamas, they just need a seat that you can block out other nightmares around you.'
Emirates' new Premium Economy design features an electrically powered divider in Airbus A350 aircrafts. The cabin has a 2-3-2 layout with 28 seats and includes cradle-recline technology, wireless charging, and 13.3-inch 4K entertainment screens.
Qantas is also betting on the trend, introducing sliding privacy doors in its Business Class suites for incoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Etihad Airways and Air New Zealand are following suit with their own privacy-enhanced designs.
