Albanese Faces Domestic Storm as He Heads to Pacific for Climate Talks
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is heading to Fiji and Tuvalu for a 'Pre-COP' meeting, one of several initiatives aimed at limiting China's influence in the Pacific. However, this trip may be seen as more of an obligation than an opportunity, especially given the current domestic political climate.
The issue of climate change has slipped down the public's agenda, with other issues such as AI and the cost of living dominating daily concerns. The Reserve Bank recently hiked interest rates for the fourth time this year, to the highest level since 2011, further intensifying the debate over who is responsible for inflation.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock emphasized that domestic capacity pressures are driving inflation, rather than overseas factors such as the Iran war. This assessment highlights the government's productivity agenda, which has yet to deliver, and raises questions about its handling of the economy.
