Albania's Food Prices Surge Five Times Faster Than EU
Albania's food prices rose by 3.2% in July compared to the same month last year, outpacing the European Union's rate of 0.6%. This means that Albanians are paying five times more for imported products than their EU counterparts.
The sharp decline of the euro this summer was expected to reduce prices, but instead, Albania's food inflation accelerated from 2.9% in June to 3.2% in July. The country had the fifth-highest food inflation rate among 36 European countries, with only Turkey, Romania, Cyprus, and Iceland experiencing higher rates.
Food accounted for almost a third of Albania's overall inflation of 3.4% in July, up from 3.2% in June. This is concerning given that food makes up 34.46% of the country's consumer spending basket.
The difference between prices and incomes is becoming increasingly apparent. Albanian consumers are paying higher prices for food products despite having lower incomes than most EU countries.
