Alberta Separatists Push for Referendum on Canadian Independence
A referendum on October 19 will ask Albertans if they should remain a part of Canada or start the process of holding a binding referendum on separation.
The Alberta government is advocating that the province stay in Canada to build a stronger, more sovereign Alberta, while separatists want to cut ties due to perceived economic unfairness and lack of representation in Ottawa.
Many Albertans feel they contribute more to Canada's economy than what they receive in return, leading some to advocate for taking control over laws, taxes, and resources.
However, experts warn that separation would cause economic uncertainty and weaken the Canadian dollar, potentially costing up to $170 billion over five years.
