Alphabet Taps Aussie Dollar Bond Market Amid Rising AI Costs
Alphabet is set to issue its first Australian dollar bond sale, as part of a growing trend in Big Tech companies tapping into capital markets to fund rising artificial intelligence (AI) costs.
The Google parent has tapped banks to arrange the sale, which will include bonds with varying maturities and interest rates. Reuters estimates that tech firms will spend over $730 billion this year on AI, putting pressure on their cash generation.
This is not Alphabet's first foray into the bond market: it issued a $25 billion US dollar bond sale in August. However, entering the Australian dollar market presents new opportunities and challenges.
The Australian dollar market has grown significantly this year, with 'kangaroo' issuance reaching around A$60 billion ($42 billion), a 40% increase from last year's levels, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. This could have implications for the AUD/USD swap market, as companies may use cross-currency swaps to convert Australian dollar cash flows back into US dollars.
