Arkansas Unemployment Rate Hits Record Low
The unemployment rate in Arkansas dropped to 3.9% in August 2026, marking its fourth consecutive monthly decline. This fall is a significant improvement over July's rate of 4.0%. The state's employment and civilian labor force have reached record highs.
According to the Arkansas Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of unemployed residents actively seeking work has steadily declined throughout 2026. In August, there were 1,780 fewer people looking for jobs compared to July. Meanwhile, the state's civilian labor force increased by 192.
The report also highlighted the significant increase in nonfarm payroll jobs, which added 12,200 positions in August due to seasonal hiring associated with the new school year. Government recorded the largest monthly increase, adding 5,700 jobs, while Private Education and Health Services added 3,200.
Over the past year, Arkansas' nonfarm payroll employment has increased by 11,300 jobs, with notable gains in Leisure and Hospitality (6,200 jobs), Professional-Business Services (3,400 jobs), Trade-Transportation-Utilities (2,800 jobs), and Construction (1,500 jobs).
