Asean Reaffirms No Common Currency Plans

Asean's Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn has stated that the idea of adopting a common currency is unlikely to become a reality.

The proposal was first floated decades ago, but member states are happy with their own currencies and do not want to change.

Kao emphasized that Asean will focus on regional economic integration through other pathways, such as removing trade barriers and increasing intra-Asean trade to 35% of the group's commerce activities.
