AUD Crashes to Six-Month Low vs JPY Amid CPI Disappointment
The Australian Dollar (AUD) fell to a six-month low against the Japanese Yen (JPY) on Wednesday after the release of underwhelming Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from Australia. The AUD had already taken a hit following the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) post-meeting press conference, where Governor Bullock hinted at a dovish tilt.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that the headline CPI rose 0.4% in August, down from 1% recorded in the previous month. However, the yearly rate accelerated to 4%, and the Trimmed Mean CPI held steady at 3.6% YoY during the reported month.
The Australian Dollar's decline was further exacerbated by concerns over looming intervention in the JPY. Japan's top currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warned markets to take joint US-Japan messaging on FX depreciation seriously, following a conversation between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the United Nations General Assembly.
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) minutes from its July monetary policy meeting revealed policymakers debating faster interest rate hikes amid growing concern over mounting inflation risks. This lifted expectations that the BoJ will hike again as soon as October or December, favoring JPY bulls and backing a further depreciating move for the AUD/JPY cross.
