AUD Falls Despite RBA Hike as Markets Question Future Rate Moves
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) hiked interest rates by 25 basis points to 4.60%, its highest level in around 15 years, and sounded hawkish about inflation.
However, this decision led to a decline in the Australian Dollar (AUD), erasing an initial advance to around 0.7030, despite expectations of higher interest rates typically supporting a currency.
The RBA's Governor Michele Bullock emphasized that inflation is driven by domestic capacity pressures and labor market tightness, but also noted that policymakers considered both raising rates and leaving them unchanged before opting for the hike.
