AUD Surges Against JPY Amid BoJ Rate Hike
The Australian Dollar (AUD) rose against the Japanese Yen (JPY) during Asian trading hours on Friday, reaching around 112.05. The move came after the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) interest rate decision to raise the short-term rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% from 1.00%, which was in line with expectations.
The BoJ board members voted 7-2 in favor of the rate hike, with Toichiro Asada and Ayano Sato dissenting. The central bank highlighted the need for vigilance against risks such as Middle East developments, AI demand, FX volatility, and their impact on the economy and prices.
BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda's press conference is expected to provide further insights into the timing and pace of future rate hikes, which could influence the JPY. In contrast, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) held its Official Cash Rate at 4.35%, with markets pricing in nearly 76% odds of a hike to 4.60% at the next RBA Board meeting.
Analysts at Danske Bank believe the BoJ will adjust its communication on the policy path, signaling a nimbler approach to tightening. The central bank's commitment to raising interest rates while keeping financial conditions accommodative supports growth but marks a firmer stance against persistent price pressures and rising inflation expectations.
