AUD Surges Against Yen, Making Japan a Bargain for Aussies
The Australian dollar has surged to its highest level against the yen since 1990, making Japan significantly cheaper for Australians. According to Travel Money Oz, a two-week high-end holiday in Japan would cost around $5355 per person at today's exchange rate, down from almost $6900 in 2023 and over $8300 in 2019.
The strong Australian dollar is due in part to the yen's decline, which Dr. Rand Low, associate professor of quantitative finance at Bond University, attributes to Japan's large debt burden, aging demographic, and low interest rates. Tom Wickenden from Betashares notes that Japan's interest rates are around 1%, contributing to its currency's depreciation.
The favorable exchange rate is a boon for Australian tourists, with over one million visiting Japan in 2025, making it the country's third most popular destination. Anhar Khanbhai from Wise warns that while the yen may not weaken further, Australians should still take advantage of the current rates to book their trips.
