AUD/USD Plunges as Hawkish Bets Unwind and US Yields Surge
The Australian dollar (AUD) has been significantly impacted by recent developments in both the US and Australia. The AUD/USD pair has fallen to fresh multi-month lows due to a combination of factors, including higher US Treasury yields and the unwinding of hawkish bets on the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) interest rate decisions.
US front-end yields have seen historically large September increases, with two-year and five-year yields rising around 54 basis points and 60 basis points, respectively. This has led to a strong US dollar, with the DXY index tracking these yields relatively closely.
In Australia, the RBA's decision to hike interest rates by 25 basis points was less hawkish than expected, leading to a repricing of market expectations for future rate increases. The narrowing of Australia's yield advantage over the US has further contributed to the AUD/USD pair's decline.
