August US Payrolls Seen Rising Modestly as Fed Focus Remains on Inflation
Economists predict a modest rebound in US payroll growth for August, following a weak summer of hiring. The expected gain of 53,000 jobs is still seen as sufficient to keep unemployment at 4.1%, reinforcing the view that Federal Reserve officials remain more focused on inflation than labor market weakness.
While Citigroup forecasts only a 20,000 job increase and possibly rising unemployment to 4.2%, the consensus forecast from Dow Jones suggests the labor market remains in a low-hire, low-fire pattern rather than moving into a sharper downturn.
The Federal Reserve officials have emphasized that the labor market is stable but unexciting, with Governor Michael Barr calling conditions 'stable' and Governor Christopher Waller saying the jobs picture is in 'satisfactory shape', leaving room for the central bank to consider raising rates if inflation does not ease further.
