Australia Raises Key Rate to 15-Year High Amid Global Price Pressures
Australia's central bank raised its key interest rate to 4.6% from 4.35%, marking the highest level in about 15 years.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) made this decision after concluding that it couldn't wait any longer to respond to rising energy costs and resilient domestic demand, which threaten to intensify inflationary pressures.
The RBA's board voted unanimously to deliver its fourth hike this year, citing further disruptions to global oil supply and recent data suggesting higher growth and inflation in Australia than expected.
The bank's Governor Michele Bullock emphasized the need for caution, stating that there may be little prospect of an early resolution to the conflict with Iran and energy prices surging globally.
