Australia Slams Brakes with Record Interest Rate Hike Amid Inflation Fears
Australia's central bank has raised its key interest rate to a 15-year high of 4.6 percent to combat inflation, which it attributes largely to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The Reserve Bank of Australia increased the cash rate by 25 basis points on Tuesday, citing the impact of the global oil supply disruptions and rising technology costs driven by artificial intelligence investments.
Economy Minister Jim Chalmers emphasized that the war in the Middle East is a significant factor in Australia's inflation challenge, stating that Australians are paying a 'very hefty price' for it.
Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock noted that the longer the conflict lasts, the more likely businesses will pass on costs to customers, and warned about the risks associated with the AI boom due to increased investment in data centers.
