Australia's top companies paid out $8 billion in dividends during the second quarter, marking a 20% increase from the same period last year. The growth was largely driven by mining companies, with Rio Tinto among several resource groups increasing payouts.

The report also highlighted that QBE Insurance contributed significantly to the surge, with its dividend tied closely to profits. This trend is part of a broader phenomenon, as companies worldwide issued a record $827.3 billion in dividends during the quarter, up 7.9% from last year.

The technology sector saw the fastest growth, driven by the AI boom and strong profit growth across the global semiconductor supply chain. Capital Group has upgraded its 2026 global dividend projection to $2.23 trillion from $2.20 trillion, citing stronger-than-expected special dividends and a weaker US dollar.
