Australian Dollar Plunges 3% as Key Support Levels Tested

The Australian Dollar (AUD/USD) has experienced a sharp decline, erasing its late-October recovery after hitting resistance at the 200-day moving average. The currency is now approaching a critical support zone, testing the June low and the lower boundary of a broader consolidation pattern. A decisive break below this level could signal further downside, with key support levels identified at 6855/65, 6800, and 6757.

The break of the October uptrend has weakened the near-term outlook for the Aussie, with stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data reinforcing expectations for further Fed tightening. This has added pressure on the AUD/USD despite the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) recent rate hike. Attention now turns to next week's U.S. inflation reports, which could influence Treasury yields and the dollar's strength.

Technical analysis shows AUD/USD trading within a descending pitchfork pattern, with initial resistance at 6904 and key resistance at 6954. A break above the upper parallel near 7000 would be needed to suggest a more significant low is in place. The focus remains on whether the currency can stabilize or come under further pressure heading into mid-November.

The RBA's rate hike this week has reinforced its commitment to containing inflation, but the stronger U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls report has bolstered expectations for another Fed rate hike in December. The upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) releases will be crucial in shaping Fed rate expectations and the broader outlook for the U.S. dollar.
