Australian Government Accused of Fueling Inflation
The Australian government has been accused of shirking its responsibility for the nation's high inflation rate, which is currently at a 40-year high outside of the pandemic. According to Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, 'the challenges that we're having now in relation to inflation are not caused by government spending.' However, this claim has been disputed by Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock.
Bullock pointed out that inflation has been driven by domestic capacity pressures, and the Middle East conflict is just one of many contributing factors. She explained that public and private demand both contribute to aggregate demand, which means that government spending is indeed part of the problem.
The Reserve Bank started raising interest rates before the conflict even began, showing that domestic factors were at play. Bullock emphasized that hiding behind external events like the Iran conflict isn't an acceptable excuse for the government's role in inflation.
