Australian Household Spending Flatlines in August Amid Rising Fuel Costs
Australia's household spending has hit a flatline in August after a strong run, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The monthly household spending indicator was unchanged at A$82.3 billion (US$57.71 billion) in August.
This comes as consumers cut back on essential items such as food and clothing, while increasing their expenditure on fuel. Despite this slowdown, analysts note that the annual pace of spending growth remains robust at 6.8 per cent.
The Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to raise interest rates for a fourth time this year later today, with the strength of consumption being one reason behind the decision.
