Australian Jobless Rate Hits Near Five-Year High
Australia's jobless rate hit its highest in nearly five years at 4.5% in July, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This unexpected fall in employment sent shockwaves through the market, causing the Australian dollar to drop by 0.2% to $0.7111.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) had been expecting a steady jobless rate of 4.4%, but the actual figure was higher than predicted. The RBA's Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser stated that they needed to see more slowdown in the labor market, which suggests that further interest rate hikes cannot be ruled out if inflation risks materialize.
The RBA has been monitoring the labor market closely, and their data shows that wages rose at a moderate pace for a fifth straight quarter. However, policymakers warned that poor productivity and restrained economic growth could impact the labor market and inflation in the long term.
