Australian Jobs Surge Puts Another Rate Hike in Focus
Australia's economy added 76,300 jobs in June 2026 on a seasonally adjusted basis, far exceeding market expectations. This robust job growth is expected to keep inflation pressures in focus as the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) considers another interest rate hike.
The RBA's cash rate currently stands at 4.35%, and markets are pricing around a 36% chance of a fourth rate rise by August. The longer-term outlook suggests investors believe there is a high likelihood of another increase before the end of 2026.
A stronger-than-expected June labour force report has jolted financial markets, with traders adjusting their expectations for a rate move. The data showed that the participation rate rose to 67.0%, indicating more people entered the labour force and found work despite the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.4%.
The RBA's decisions are influenced by various factors, including persistently high employment, inflation pressures, and energy prices. Brent crude oil has moved above US$100 a barrel, adding to the inflation concerns central banks monitor closely.
