Australian Wool Market Prices Decline Amidst Currency Volatility
The Australian wool market experienced a decline in prices this week, with most Micron Price Guides (MPGs) falling as a result. The market indicator for Sydney fell by 28¢, Melbourne declined by 25¢, and Fremantle fell by 44¢. In Sydney, fine merino wool suffered significant losses, with the 17 MPG declining by 43¢ to 2595¢, the 18 MPG down by 50¢ to 2470¢, and the 19 MPG falling by 40¢ to 2235¢.
The bale offering increased by 6% to 29,406 while the passed-in rate rose to 12.8%. The EMI (Eastern Market Indicator) was down this week by 26¢ to 1819¢ in AUD terms and by 42¢ to 1268¢ in USD terms following an 1.9% fall in the Australian Dollar.
The market's uncertainty is exacerbated by currency volatility, which has been adding to the complexity of determining a comfortable price level for both buyers and sellers. The Australian Dollar depreciated 1.9% to sit below 70¢ following the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision on Tuesday to raise the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%. However, RBA governor Michelle Bullock's shifting tone along with a lower than expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) suggested that a further rate rise may not eventuate.
