Australia's August Inflation Rate Surpasses Reserve Bank Target
Australia's annual headline inflation rate has reached 4% in August 2026, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This marks a 0.6 percentage point increase from July's 3.5%, exceeding economists' expectations for 4.1%. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) targets an inflation range of 2-3%.
Housing and transport costs drove the rise in prices, with housing inflation increasing to 5.7% from 5.0% in July, and transport inflation accelerating to 5.6% from 1.6%. This is attributed to higher automotive fuel prices and the removal of federal government fuel excise relief measures in August.
The trimmed mean CPI remained unchanged at 3.6% year-on-year, its highest level since September 2024. On a monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.4%, below expectations of a 0.5% gain and slowing from a 1.0% increase in July.
