Australia's Economic Outlook Deteriorates as Global Rates Bite
Australia's economic outlook is deteriorating rapidly, driven by rising global interest rates and stubborn inflation. The US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan have aggressively increased interest rates in recent weeks to combat persistent global inflation. The US Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points, marking the beginning of an active tightening cycle.
Local financial commentators predict that the Reserve Bank of Australia will increase rates later this month. Global bond yields have surged to multiyear highs, with the Australian 10-year government bond yielding around 5.4 per cent, its highest level since mid-2011.
The Albanese-Chalmers government has yet to address productivity growth, which is crucial in tackling entrenched inflation. Instead, the government relies on taxpayers to fund its policies, ignoring the inflationary impact of soaring fuel prices and elevated energy costs.
