Australia's Economy Faces Perfect Storm in 2026

Australia's economy is facing a perfect storm in 2026 as higher interest rates, a cooling jobs market, and pressure on housing values combine to create a difficult environment for households.

The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) monetary policy settings remain one of the most important factors affecting household finances. Higher interest rates have increased mortgage repayment pressures for borrowers, particularly those who moved from lower fixed-rate periods into higher-rate lending environments.

The RBA's inflation target range is 2-3%, but annual inflation remains above this at 3.5% in July 2026, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) monthly Consumer Price Index indicator. Underlying inflation also remained elevated at 3.6%.

Energy markets have added another layer of uncertainty, with Brent crude oil prices moving above USD 100 per barrel, increasing concerns about higher fuel costs and potential flow-through effects on transport and production expenses.
