Australia's Economy Under Pressure from Rising Costs and Debt Concerns
Australia's economy is facing increased pressure from rising inflation and living costs, which are affecting households and businesses. The country's Consumer Price Index rose by 3.5 per cent in the 12 months to July, with underlying trimmed mean inflation remaining at 3.6 per cent.
Certain expenses such as food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 3.2 per cent over the year, while clothing and footwear went up by 4.9 per cent. Housing costs rose by 5 per cent in July alone due to higher global oil prices and the partial unwinding of federal fuel excise relief.
Reserve Bank of Australia deputy governor Andrew Hauser acknowledged that people are frustrated with inflation, calling it 'unfair' as it hits low-income households harder. He also stated that businesses find it challenging to operate under these conditions.
