Australia's Inflation Rate Triggers Fresh Bets on Interest Rate Hike
Australia's inflation rate remains high, spurring economists from Goldman Sachs Group Inc to Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to predict another interest rate increase as early as next month.
The turnaround followed Wednesday's inflation report that showed price pressures remained elevated and came after minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) August meeting indicated the RBA has low tolerance for higher consumer prices.
CBA predicted a quarter-point hike to 4.6% in November, with the risk of a move at the September 28 and 29 meeting, citing that 'tighter monetary policy is needed in the Australian economy.'
