Hedge Funds Bet Big on Aussie as RBA Hike Expectations Outweigh NZ Election Risks

Hedge funds are aggressively positioning themselves in favor of the Australian dollar against the New Zealand dollar. They're betting that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will maintain a hawkish stance on interest rates, while the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) faces pressure to implement rate cuts.

The RBA has resisted the global pivot toward monetary easing, with Governor Michele Bullock ruling out rate cuts in the near term. In contrast, the RBNZ is navigating a rapidly cooling economy and is expected to ease rates soon.

The upcoming New Zealand elections also add uncertainty, as institutional capital historically abhors political ambiguity. If a pro-business coalition secures a decisive mandate, the Kiwi may experience a brief relief rally, but a hung parliament or prolonged negotiation period could trigger capital flight.
