Australia's Jobless Rate Hits Five-Year High Amid Rising Inflation Concerns
Australia's jobless rate rose to a five-year high in August, despite employment growth. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that unemployment increased to 4.6%, surpassing forecasts for a steady 4.5%. This rise was driven by an influx of people entering the labor force, with the participation rate climbing to 67.1%.
The net employment increase in August was 39,500, exceeding market expectations of 20,000. However, this growth was solely due to part-time roles, while full-time employment fell.
Economists believe that the Reserve Bank of Australia will raise interest rates for a fourth time next Tuesday to combat inflation. Governor Michele Bullock has stated that unemployment between 4.5% and 5.0% could help restrain inflation, suggesting some increase might be necessary from current levels.
