Bailey Dampens Rate Hike Expectations: Economic Conditions Still Uncertain
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has tempered market expectations of interest rate hikes in the UK. According to him, current economic conditions are still too difficult to predict and require more time to assess.
In a recent statement after the BoE maintained its interest rates on Thursday (17/9), Bailey acknowledged that market speculation regarding future rate changes is inevitable. However, he cautioned that it's essential for markets to form their own expectations rather than relying solely on central bank statements.
Bailey has previously expressed concerns about market expectations being too quick to predict rate hikes. In April, he stated that the market was overly optimistic in its projections, and in July, he emphasized that a rate hike by the end of the year was far from certain.
