Bailey Warns Against Rushing AI Regulation
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has urged policymakers to delay regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). He believes that instead of immediately enacting laws, regulators should focus on rigorous testing of systems to identify vulnerabilities and mitigate risks.
Bailey acknowledged that the threats associated with AI are real and rapidly increasing. However, he opposed banning or halting developments, emphasizing the significant economic benefits of the technology.
The central bank head believes that the industry needs clear frameworks and intervention mechanisms. He noted that the UK's AI Safety Institute is already conducting assessments, but the pace of this work needs to be accelerated.
