Bailey Warns on AI Market Risks as Nvidia Hits $5.5 Trillion Valuation
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has expressed concerns about the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) to financial markets. He warned that not everyone investing in AI will come out a winner, and asset prices of some companies could fall.
Bailey noted that huge investments are being made in AI, with Google rival Nvidia becoming the world's most valuable listed company, valued at $5.5 trillion dollars. This surge in investment is causing markets to value AI companies as multi-trillion-dollar businesses, which Bailey described as 'natural' but also cautioned against.
The governor pointed out that tech giants such as Alphabet and Meta are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on AI research, and major AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are preparing to sell shares on the US stock market. This has led Bailey to warn about potential shocks to markets and the need for the system to be resilient.
