Bailey Warns on AI Risks: Urges Stronger Testing Before Regulation
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has emphasized the importance of strengthening AI testing before introducing regulatory measures. In his first published article, Bailey described the dangers associated with artificial intelligence as 'real and increasingly significant,' but also highlighted its immense benefits.
Bailey urged developers and authorities to work together to identify potential weaknesses and necessary safeguards in AI systems. He noted that the UK is already conducting substantial work to evaluate AI technologies, including the role of its AI Security Institute in establishing standards.
However, Bailey stressed that more needs to be done to accelerate progress, citing the need for a framework to allow intervention when necessary and define clear limits for AI systems. He acknowledged that rigorous assessments would inevitably uncover shortcomings and cases where 'models will behave unexpectedly.'
