Bank Customers Feel Pinch as RBA's Surcharge Ban Approaches
Trevor Vienet, a long-time customer of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), has decided to switch banks after nearly four decades of loyalty. The decision was prompted by changes in the relationship between CBA and the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, as well as new bank fees.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is set to ban credit and debit surcharge fees on October 1, which will save consumers around $1.6 billion annually but reduce banks' revenues. In response, CBA introduced a new rewards program called Yello, but Vienet does not qualify for it.
Many banks are raising credit card fees or reducing travel rewards and insurance benefits in anticipation of the interchange fee adjustments. This has raised concerns that consumers may see increased fees as banks pass costs onto customers.
