Bank of Canada Strike Enters 100th Day Amid Labour Law Controversy

NDP Leader Avi Lewis accused the federal government of breaking its own labour laws by using replacement workers during a strike involving security officers at the Bank of Canada. The strike has now reached nearly 100 days, with no end in sight.

In 2024, Canada passed legislation to ban federally regulated workplaces from bringing in replacement workers during a legal strike, and the new rules took effect last year. Lewis spoke to striking Bank of Canada security guards on the picket line outside the Bank of Canada in Ottawa on Wednesday, saying that the government's actions are 'defying its own labour laws.'

The use of replacement workers is seen as a controversial tactic by many labour experts and politicians. The NDP has been vocal about its opposition to the practice.
