Bank of Canada Strike Tests New Labour Law
NDP Leader Avi Lewis accused the federal government of defying its own labour laws after Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem admitted to using replacement workers during a strike involving security officers.
The strike, which began in June, is testing the new law that prohibits federally regulated workplaces from bringing in replacement workers during a legal strike. The legislation was passed in 2024 and took effect last year.
According to Lewis, this strike marks the first test of the law, and the government and Bank of Canada have shown they're willing to 'defy the law of this country.'
The Canada Industrial Relations Board has ruled that the central bank contravened the Canada Labour Code by using contractors and union members during the strike.
