Bank of England Appoints New Members to Its Court
The Bank of England has announced several key appointments to its Court, which serves as the bank's board. David Craig and Paul Nowak have been appointed to four-year terms until August 31st, 2030. Hanneke Smits will join them on January 1st, 2027, also for a four-year term.
The new appointments come after Sir Ron Kalifa and Baroness Frances O'Grady stepped down from their positions. Craig and Nowak will attend their first Court meetings on September 17th and October 22nd, respectively. Smits, meanwhile, will take up the position held by Sabine Chalmers, who is resigning at the end of October 2026.
The appointments were made through a fair and open competition in line with the Governance Code on Public Appointments. Craig has over 30 years' experience as a senior financial markets executive, while Nowak is General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress. Smits brings extensive non-executive experience from her roles at the Wellcome Trust and other institutions.
