Bank of England Expected to Hold Rates as UK Inflation Reaches Five-Month High
The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75% on Thursday, despite inflation in the UK reaching a five-month high. According to economists, a majority of the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee will vote to maintain the current rate for a sixth consecutive meeting.
The consumer price inflation in August accelerated to 3.1%, up from 2.9% in July, driven by higher petrol prices and airfares. This has pushed inflation further above the Bank of England's 2% target.
Economists expect inflationary pressures to remain elevated in the coming months, particularly as households face another increase in domestic energy bills from October. Financial markets are pricing in the possibility of another interest-rate increase at one of the Bank of England's next two meetings, scheduled for November and December.
