Bank of England Hike Focus Shifts to Future Rate Path Guidance

The Bank of England is widely expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points, a move that markets have already priced in. The real focus, however, will be on the guidance provided by policymakers regarding future hikes. With UK inflation at 3.5% and services inflation rising to 3.7%, markets are anticipating three to four more rate increases. The meeting minutes, Governor Andrew Bailey's press conference, and updated economic forecasts will reveal the central bank's stance on further tightening.

Fiona Cincotta, a senior market analyst at StoneX, suggests that policymakers may push back against the aggressive market expectations. Higher interest rates could weigh on economic growth, leading to a potential 'dovish hike' where the Bank of England signals fewer future increases than markets expect. Conversely, a more hawkish tone would validate the current pricing.

The EUR/GBP exchange rate is caught in an entrenched downtrend, reflecting sterling's strength against the euro. A dovish hike could reverse this trend, strengthening the euro, while a hawkish stance would likely push the pair lower. The outcome hinges on the Bank of England's guidance rather than the rate hike itself.

Services inflation, a key indicator for domestic price pressures, has risen to 3.7% from 3.4%, signaling that energy costs are impacting the broader economy. This metric is closely watched by the Bank of England as it assesses the need for further rate adjustments.
