Bank of England Holds Base Rate Amid Rising Inflation Concerns
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to maintain the base rate at 3.75%, a move that may disappoint borrowers hoping for cheaper mortgages in the near future.
This decision was made by a majority vote, with six members favoring a hold and three advocating for a 0.25 percentage point increase to 4%. The MPC is concerned about inflation staying high at 3.1% and swap rates rising, which has already prompted mortgage lenders to hike their pricing.
Neil Louth of The Acorn Group notes that the decision provides 'a welcome window of stability' ahead of the Budget on October 28 and the Bank's next decision on November 5.
Jeremy Leaf, a north London estate agent, is more cautious, warning that a rate rise would be 'helpful but not helpful in an already fragile market'. He believes that an increase in rates is becoming increasingly likely, which could further reduce buyer confidence.
