Bank of England Holds Interest Rates at 3.75% Amid Inflation Fears
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held its key interest rate at 3.75% in a 6-3 vote, with three members advocating for a 0.25 percentage point increase to 4%. The decision comes amidst rising inflationary pressures triggered by the Iran war and escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The conflict has led to volatile global energy prices, with crude and refined energy costs remaining higher than pre-conflict levels. While monetary policy cannot directly influence energy prices, the MPC aims to ensure that economic adjustments occur in a way that achieves the 2% inflation target sustainably.
CPI inflation has fallen to 2.6%, but is expected to rise later this year as higher energy prices continue to pass through. The Committee notes that loose labour market conditions and higher interest rates faced by households and businesses will also contribute to reducing inflation over time.
