Bank of England Holds Rate Steady Amid Rising Energy Prices
The Bank of England has kept its benchmark interest rate at 3.75%, despite concerns over inflation and rising energy prices. The Monetary Policy Committee voted six to three in favor of holding rates, with Megan Greene, Catherine Mann, and Huw Pill supporting an immediate increase to 4%.
The dissenters argued that the situation did not justify waiting, but the majority agreed that the current rate is sufficient. Inflation stood at 3.1% in August, and the central bank expects it to rise further, with estimates suggesting it could exceed 4% by early 2027.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warned that tighter policy may be needed if energy prices remain high, and second-round inflationary effects become more likely. The committee's next meeting is scheduled for November 5, and market participants see a possible rate increase at one of the next two meetings.
