Bank of England Holds Rates Amid Inflation Concerns
The Bank of England has decided to hold its interest rates at 3.75%. This decision was met with mixed reactions from industry experts, who are concerned about the impact of inflation and energy prices on households.
Tamsin Powell, Consumer Finance Expert at Creditspring, emphasized that while a pause in rates may provide some relief, it does not mean financial pressure will ease for households. With inflation still above 2% and energy costs continuing to rise, many people are feeling the squeeze.
John Phillips, CEO of Just Mortgages and Spicerhaart, noted that even with the news on inflation yesterday, holding rates feels like the right call for now. However, he expressed concern about the impact of the Iran war on oil prices and its subsequent effect on borrowing costs.
Suren Thiru, ICAEW Chief Economist, suggested that policymakers have chosen to exercise patience rather than panic, balancing the inflationary fallout from the energy shock against little evidence of persistent price pressures. However, he also noted a hardening of hawkish sentiment within the committee, keeping the door open for a potential rate hike in November.
