Bank of England Interest Rate Decision Today: Will Rates Rise?
The Bank of England will announce its decision on interest rates today at noon London time. The current rate stands at 3.75%, and almost every forecast expects it to remain unchanged. However, the recent rise in inflation data from 2.9% in July to 3.1% in August may indicate a shift in the committee's stance.
The increase in inflation is primarily driven by rising fuel prices, which have increased by 23% from a year earlier. The Bank of England expects inflation to reach 4% or more by early 2027, twice its target. This has led some experts to suggest that higher interest rates may be necessary to prevent second-round effects.
However, others argue that the inflation is entirely imported and that higher interest rates cannot bring down the price of oil. The decision today will not directly affect most borrowers on fixed-rate mortgages, but a 0.25-point increase would add about £35 a month to payments on tracker mortgages or standard variable rates.
Today's announcement will be closely watched for the vote count, as a 6:3 split would leave everything unchanged while a 5:4 vote would make a November hike more likely.
