Bank of England Rate Decision Sees Divergence Between Committee and Market
The Bank of England's rate decision saw three policymakers vote for a 25-basis point hike, while six members opted to keep policy unchanged. The market, however, priced in fewer rate increases following the announcement.
Fiona Cincotta, Senior Market Analyst at StoneX, notes that the committee's internal balance and market expectations are usually aligned. But this time, they diverged, with a hardening committee being countered by a softening rate path.
The inflation data also contributed to the divergence. Headline inflation rose, but services inflation remained unchanged, which some interpreted as evidence of limited wage pressure.
Cincotta observes that sterling has come under pressure as these divergences have played out, with other major central banks having taken a more hawkish stance.
