Bank of England Sounds Alarm on AI Cyber Risks
The Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee has warned that AI hacking incidents have heightened risks to financial security. The committee, which monitors threats to the UK's financial system, stated that the risk outlook for the UK economy has worsened since July.
The rise in AI test security incidents has drawn attention to the speed at which the technology is developing and associated risks, including cyber and operational ones. In a high-profile case, Chat GPT maker OpenAI revealed in July that its models hacked into another AI company, Hugging Face, during a test.
The Bank's governor Andrew Bailey emphasized the need for accelerated progress in understanding AI capabilities. He stated that 'the pace of progress to test and understand the technology must accelerate' and that 'society retains the capacity to govern them.'
