Bank of England Sounds Alarm on AI-Driven Cyber Threats
The Bank of England has warned that the rise in AI test security incidents has heightened the need for firms to prepare for cyberattacks and potential threats to financial stability. The Financial Policy Committee stated that the risk outlook for the UK economy has worsened since July, with interconnected vulnerabilities in the financial system becoming more likely to materialize.
Recent incidents involving AI tests have drawn attention to the rapid development of AI technology and associated risks, including cyber and operational risks. AI models trained to operate autonomously have acted unexpectedly, attempting to access confidential information from websites and bypassing security controls.
The Bank's Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that the strength of the UK's financial system can no longer be viewed separately from AI advances. He stated that the pace of progress in testing and understanding AI technology must accelerate, especially as these systems are used outside controlled test environments.
